What Care & Place collects, why, and the choices you have.

Last updated: October 11, 2026 · Care & Place

Who we are

Care & Place (“Care & Place”, “we”) runs this website: a free directory of U.S. nursing homes built from public Medicare (CMS) data, with optional one-on-one help for families and optional listing plans for nursing homes. This policy covers this website and the forms on it.

In short: we collect only what you send us, use it to help you, and do not sell or share it for advertising.

Information you give us

You can search, read facility reports, save and compare homes without giving us any personal information. We only receive personal information when you choose to send it through one of our forms:

  • Get Help (family help request): your name, email and search location, and optionally your phone number, best time to reach you, your relationship to the person needing care, the type of care, timeline, hospital, insurance and a message.
  • Request More Info about a home: your name and email, optionally your phone number, the topics you ask about and a message, plus which home you asked about.
  • Family reviews: the name you choose to show, your relationship to the resident, your ratings and review, and your email (never shown; used only to confirm the review if needed).
  • Facility listing, claim and partner forms: your name, role, work email and phone, and the facility or organization details you provide. To confirm a claim, we may call the home’s phone number listed with Medicare.

Please do not send medical records or detailed health information through any form. We are not a healthcare provider and do not need it to help you.

Information collected automatically

Anonymous activity counts. To show nursing homes how often their listing is seen, the site counts events such as a facility page being viewed, a home appearing in search results, or a home being saved or compared. Each count records only the facility, the type of event and the date. It contains no name, no IP address and no cookie, and cannot be linked to you.

Approximate location. To open the map on your state, the site may look up your state from your internet address at the moment you visit. The state is used for that page and is not stored by us. If you allow your browser to share your location, it is used to sort nearby homes and is kept only in your browser for up to 30 days.

Server logs. Our hosting provider, Netlify, keeps standard technical logs (such as IP address, browser type and pages requested) to run and secure the site.

We do not use advertising cookies, advertising trackers, tracking pixels or third-party analytics.

Information kept on your device

Your saved homes, notes, recently viewed homes, comparison list, saved searches and location preference are stored in your own browser (local storage), not on our servers. They stay on that device until you remove them with the site’s controls or clear your browser’s site data.

How we use information

  • To respond to your request and, if you ask, to help you with your nursing home search.
  • To pass your question to a nursing home when you ask us to contact that home for you.
  • To review and publish family reviews, and to keep reviews honest and on topic.
  • To talk with facilities and partners about listings and partnerships they asked about, and to confirm who may manage a listing.
  • To run, secure and improve the site, and to give nursing homes anonymous counts of how often their listing is seen.

When we share information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. We do not share it with nursing homes or anyone else for their own marketing.

  • With a nursing home, at your request. If you ask about or want to be put in touch with a specific home, we share what is needed for that, with that home only.
  • With service providers who run the site for us, such as Netlify (hosting and form handling) and our payment processor, under their own privacy and security commitments.
  • Published reviews. If your review is published, the name you chose, your relationship to the resident, your ratings and your review text appear publicly on the facility’s page. Your email never does.
  • When required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and security of our users, the public or Care & Place.
  • If Care & Place is sold or merged, your information may pass to the new owner, who must keep this policy’s promises for it.

Health information and HIPAA

Care & Place is not a healthcare provider, health plan or other entity covered by HIPAA, so HIPAA does not apply to what you send us. We still treat anything you tell us about a person’s care as sensitive: we use it only to answer your request, never sell it or use it for advertising, and share it only as described above. Under consumer health data laws such as Washington’s My Health My Data Act, you can ask to see or delete it and to withdraw consent, using the steps below.

Services our pages load

To show maps and fonts, pages load files from other services: map tiles from OpenFreeMap and OpenStreetMap, area outlines from the U.S. Census Bureau, map software from unpkg.com, and fonts from Google Fonts. These services receive your internet address when your browser requests their files, under their own privacy policies. We send them no personal information.

Payments

The directory is free for families. If you buy family navigation or a facility listing plan, payment details are handled by our payment processor and are not stored by us; we receive confirmation of the payment, not your full card number.

Calls, texts and emails

If you tick the consent box on a form, we may contact you about your request by email, phone or text. Reply STOP to any text to stop texts. Any emails we send tell you how to stop them. We do not send marketing emails to people who did not ask for them.

How long we keep information

  • Family help requests and questions about a home: deleted 24 months after our last contact with you.
  • Review emails: deleted 12 months after the review is published or declined. The published review stays until you or the home’s listing asks for it to be removed and it qualifies.
  • Facility and billing records: kept as long as the law requires for business and tax records.
  • Anonymous activity counts: kept as monthly totals.

You can ask us to delete your information sooner (see below).

Your choices and rights

You can ask us to show you, correct or delete the personal information you sent us, to withdraw consent, or to stop contacting you. To do so, reach us through our contact form. We will confirm the request comes from you, and respond within 30 days, or within 45 days where a state law allows that. You can also have an authorized agent ask for you. If we turn down a request, you can appeal by replying to our answer, and we will explain the outcome.

These choices apply wherever you live. Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon and other states with privacy laws have these rights by law, and we will not treat you differently for using them.

Do Not Sell or Share. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as an opt-out anyway.

Children

This site is meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn we have, we delete it.

Security

We use reputable providers, encrypted connections (HTTPS) and limited access to submissions. No system is perfectly secure, so please share only what is needed for your request.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page and note significant changes here. We will not use information you already sent us in a new way without asking you first.
